The Gaines Park Tennis Association and USTA Florida co-sponsored the 1st Annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration Games at the Gaines Park Tennis Facility on June 18, 2022. The event marked the Freedom of African Americans as slaves in 1865. Juneteenth is now a national holiday. Congress passed The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in June 2021, a day after the Senate passed the bill with unanimous consent. President Joe Biden signed the bill into law on June 17 – two days before Juneteenth.
The events were festive with plenty of Fun, Fitness, Fellowship and Food. There were workshops, round-robin tournament play, and open-play for all ages. The highlight of the event was a Juneteenth story time session led by our own Storyteller Mrs. Marion Hedgepath.
A good time was had by all! We look forward to growing this event next year and for years to come.
